Me and Issey were on our to a coffee and while passing by the “sagarey park” we noticed that the flag was being re-newed. I enjoy watching that little ceremony. It’s pretty neat how it’s done.
Anyway, this talk came up, sometime back (it seems) some people at the majilis wanted a new flag!! To replace the one we have!! What wrong with the current one??.. (And moving on with the talk) it lead to the burning of the national flag at a strike!!.. What’s wrong with people??.. Hate maumoon as much you want, but the flag does not belong to him and the flag most certainly does not resemble maumoon. It resembles us, Maldivians. It’s our face to the world. It’s by which we stand. If we don’t respect it, who would??..
This led me to thinking.. what does it mean to me??.. well, it means allot to me. In my presence i wouldn’t let anyone (Maldivian or not) discriminate the Maldivian flag. It is our resemblance in an International community. Red for the blood of our heroes. Green for the palm trees and greenness of our nation. White crescent for us being unified Muslims.
So, just wanted to know your thought on this. Maldivian Flag: What is it to you?..

maldivian flag is something in which you can hid you kitchen knife when trying to stab some one with it, as proved from the super scout incident.
and i have one single problem with the flag… its my personal opinion how ever. that white crescent part.
1.I think it symbolizes how islam is forced upon all maldvians…which i am not vert proud of.u most probably will disagree with this.. but go on to point two.
2.crescent is NOT a symbol of islam.it is a pagan symbol.it was adopted by the ottoman empire becoz it was in turkey’s flag from the pagan times. prophet mohamed and the four claiphs and many other caliphs used plain flags.because islam is not verymuch into symbolism.prophet mohamed knew all religions have symbols…but did not want islam to have one.during that time quraish have a flag with an eagle on it.but mohamed prefered a simple flag.and if he knew ppl r usin pagans symbols in islam’s name..he would not be happy about it.
anyways.. i think the white cresent is nothing maldivian because it is pagan.and because maldives is more than just islam.we have been buddhist more than the time weve been muslims..and not all maldvians are muslims.

I do agree with your views. Those members who lobbied in the majilis for a new flag said our flag should have blue color in it, symbolizing ocean. I prefer to have a skipjack tuna and a bottle of Rihaakuru to be replaced by the cresent. I have no objection with colors.

“You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can’t just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the “land of the free”.

The flag is what gets our adrenaline rushing once we see it among all other flags in an international conference, sports event, blah and blah and go, “Hey there’s our flag!!!”. :> Basically it’s our symbol of existence as an independent nation in this world.
